Postpartum Care
Your care does not end after delivery. The weeks and months following childbirth, known as the postpartum period, are just as important as pregnancy when it comes to your physical and emotional health. At Complete Care ObGyn, our Henderson OB/GYN team provides compassionate postpartum care to support recovery, healing, and adjustment after birth.
Whether you had a vaginal delivery or a cesarean section, our goal is to help you recover safely and feel supported during this important transition.
What Is Postpartum Care?
Postpartum care includes medical and emotional support during the first several weeks after childbirth. Care focuses on healing, mental well-being, infant feeding support, and family planning.
Your first postpartum visit is typically scheduled within six weeks after delivery, though earlier visits may be recommended based on your needs or delivery experience.
What to Expect at Your Postpartum Visit
During your visit, your provider will assess both physical recovery and emotional well-being. Topics commonly discussed include:
- Healing after vaginal delivery or C-section
- Bleeding patterns and uterine recovery
- Breastfeeding or formula feeding support
- Birth control and family planning options
- Sleep, nutrition, and hydration
- Screening for postpartum mood changes
- Sexual health and intimacy concerns
This visit is also a space to ask questions and discuss anything that feels challenging or overwhelming.
Physical Recovery After Childbirth
The body goes through significant changes after delivery, and recovery takes time. Postpartum care may address:
- Normal vaginal bleeding and changes in lochia
- Healing of perineal tears or cesarean incisions
- Breast engorgement, tenderness, or mastitis
- Constipation or hemorrhoids
- Pelvic floor discomfort
- Bladder or bowel changes
Your provider will guide you on pain relief, wound care, and safely returning to physical activity.
Emotional and Mental Health Support
Hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and new responsibilities can affect mood after childbirth. Emotional support is a key part of postpartum care.
We screen for postpartum depression and anxiety and offer guidance for:
- Understanding baby blues versus postpartum depression
- Accessing counseling or support resources
- Medication options when appropriate
- Partner and family support strategies
You are not alone, and help is available.
Breastfeeding and Infant Feeding Support
Whether you choose to breastfeed, formula feed, or combine both, support is available. Postpartum care may include guidance on:
- Latching and feeding techniques
- Managing soreness or blocked ducts
- Pumping and returning to work
- Monitoring feeding frequency and baby’s growth
- Nutritional needs during feeding
Your feeding choices are supported with practical, nonjudgmental care.
Postpartum Birth Control and Family Planning
It is possible to become pregnant again soon after delivery. During postpartum visits, your provider will review birth control options that align with your goals and timeline.
Options may include methods discussed during birth control and family planning, including pills, IUDs, implants, injections, barrier methods, or natural family planning.
Pelvic Floor and Sexual Health
Pelvic pressure, discomfort during intercourse, or bladder changes are common after childbirth and are often treatable.
Support may include:
- Referrals for pelvic floor physical therapy
- Management of vaginal dryness or hormonal changes
- Evaluation of incontinence or prolapse
- Guidance for emotional or physical intimacy concerns
Care may also connect with services such as sexual health counseling when helpful.
When to Call Your Provider
Do not wait for a scheduled visit if you experience:
- Heavy bleeding soaking more than one pad per hour
- Fever or signs of infection
- Increasing pain, redness, or swelling at an incision site
- Breast pain with redness or warmth
- Chest pain or shortness of breath
- Severe mood changes or thoughts of self-harm
Prompt care can prevent complications and support recovery.
