What Is Prenatal Care?
Prenatal care is the medical care you receive throughout pregnancy. Regular visits allow your provider to monitor your health and your baby’s development, manage symptoms, and address questions as they arise.
Prenatal visits typically include:
- Monitoring fetal growth and development
- Screening for pregnancy-related complications
- Managing common pregnancy symptoms
- Education on what is normal and when to seek care
- Nutritional and lifestyle guidance
- Preparation for labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery
Consistent prenatal care supports a healthy pregnancy and helps reduce risks for both parent and baby.
Your First Prenatal Visit
The first prenatal appointment is usually scheduled around eight weeks of pregnancy. During this visit, your provider will:
- Confirm the pregnancy and estimate your due date
- Review your medical history and any previous pregnancies
- Perform a physical exam and initial lab work
- Discuss prenatal vitamins and early pregnancy symptoms
- Answer questions about what to expect in the coming weeks
This visit is also an opportunity to discuss preexisting conditions, medications, or lifestyle changes that may affect pregnancy.
Ongoing Pregnancy Care
Throughout pregnancy, you will have regular visits and screenings tailored to each trimester.
First Trimester (Weeks 1–12)
- Initial lab testing and genetic screening options
- Early ultrasound to confirm viability and due date
- Support for nausea, fatigue, and emotional changes
Second Trimester (Weeks 13–27)
- Anatomy ultrasound around 20 weeks
- Screening for gestational diabetes
- Monitoring fetal growth and movement
- Discussion of birth planning and prenatal education
Third Trimester (Weeks 28–40+)
- More frequent visits to track fetal position and well-being
- Group B strep testing
- Conversations about labor signs and delivery planning
- Preparation for postpartum care and newborn needs
High-Risk Pregnancy Care
Some pregnancies require closer monitoring due to medical conditions or complications. Our team is experienced in managing high-risk pregnancies and works closely with specialists when needed.
Conditions that may require additional care include:
- High blood pressure or preeclampsia
- Gestational diabetes
- Multiple gestation such as twins or triplets
- Risk of preterm labor
- Advanced maternal age
- Placenta or fetal growth concerns
When appropriate, we coordinate care with maternal-fetal medicine specialists to ensure the highest level of support.
Support Beyond Medical Care
Pregnancy involves physical, emotional, and lifestyle changes. In addition to medical monitoring, we provide guidance and support for:
- Emotional health and mental well-being
- Nutrition and safe physical activity
- Medication safety and symptom relief
- Intimacy and relationship changes
- Breastfeeding preparation and postpartum recovery
Each visit is an opportunity to check in on how you are feeling, not just physically, but emotionally as well.
Delivery Planning
As your due date approaches, we work with you to develop a birth plan that reflects your preferences and medical needs. Topics often include:
- Signs of labor and when to go to the hospital
- Pain management options
- Vaginal or cesarean delivery planning
- Support people during labor and delivery
- Immediate postpartum and newborn care
Your birth experience is personal, and our role is to support it with skill, respect, and compassion.
Postpartum Care
Care continues after delivery. Postpartum visits help support recovery and adjustment after birth.
Postpartum care focuses on:
- Physical healing after delivery
- Monitoring bleeding and recovery
- Breastfeeding or formula feeding support
- Birth control and family planning
- Managing postpartum mood changes
- Adjusting to life with a newborn
We remain available throughout the fourth trimester and beyond.
